Moncton builder earns rave reviews from customers in claiming top prize from Atlantic Home Warranty Program

Wesco Construction Ltd. of Moncton is a hit with their customers.
The recipient of this year's Customer Choice Award presented by the Atlantic Home Warranty Program, Wesco's owner, Kevin Maillet, is "gratified" with the recognition.

Based on survey results from the homeowners of individual builders, as the name suggests it's actually the customers who decide the winner. From pre-construction sales through to the construction process and after sale service, 26 survey questions rate the experience of that builder's customers -- including whether or not they would recommend them to family and friends.

In the construction business for more than 35 years, it was actually Alphonse Maillet, Kevin's dad, who started Wesco Construction Ltd. in 1981. It was preceded by a company of another name that he and a partner began in 1975, before they eventually split up and he went on his own.

New home builders primarily in the Moncton, Dieppe and Riverview area, their business consists of custom homes, speculation homes and semi-detached homes (also known as empty-nester bungalows). Winning the Customer Choice Award reflects the company's attitude toward their clients.

"We keep our customers satisfied is the main reason (we won)," says Alphonse Maillet. "We always make sure that the customer is satisfied with the product that we provide to them. Making sure that the customer is satisfied is our main purpose. We use only top quality sub-trades and suppliers so that we can achieve a good product that the customer will be happy with."

He feels it's "probably experience and customer satisfaction" that are the distinguishing features of a reputable builder.

In full flight during the busy building season, Wesco Construction continues to be in demand 12 months of the year.

"It keeps us very busy actually," says Kevin Maillet. "We've got three going up now and we've got some others that we're looking at starting soon.

If the demand is there we build all year. The last five or six years there's been a nice little boom in Moncton that's kept us going all year-round."

It was just about "10 or 11 years ago" that Kevin Maillet began with the family company, and at that time Wesco was running all their own framing crews with more employees. He began working labour and as a "go-getter", and in the "last couple of years" becoming more involved at all levels.

Despite the recession, the company is "holding at par", and their home prices range anywhere from about $165,000 for their semi-detached all the way up to between $500,000 and $600,000. Whatever the customer wants, they build it, and it costs accordingly.

As for turnaround time, it depends on size and intricacies. Usually though it takes them about three to four months to build an average-sized home.

"It goes without saying" that Wesco Construction Ltd. is dedicated to quality.

"We're out here to do the best we can," says Kevin Maillet. "To make sure you're satisfied, and to deliver a product that you are proud to own."

The proof of the pudding is in the eating of it, and the Customer Choice Award is certainly evidence of that. Happy customers abound, like Norm and Mary Denis of Moncton who are themselves delighted new owners of one of Wesco's empty-nester bungalows.

Two years in the planning, the Denises finally decided to sell their large single family home and downsize. With their family grown and gone, Norm retired and Mary to follow next year, semi-detached proved to be the way to go -- and they were very satisfied.

"The house is just great," says Norm Denis. "We got all the things that we wanted in it, they (Wesco) were very accommodating and everything was done on time. I checked out different builders in the area and Wesco had a very very good reputation.

We saw the unit, we knew the builder's reputation -- everything fit. With the unit we purchased everything is on one level. We still have a full basement . . . and the kitchen, dining, livingroom is all open concept. It kind of just flows . . .

"The design of the place on the outside is really really beautiful. We sit out on the verandah in the evening and have our tea. Life couldn't be better."

Norm and Mary Denis have nothing but good to say about Wesco Construction, which leaves little doubt as to why this builder was chosen for a Customer Choice Award.

"You couldn't ask for nicer people to help you out," says Denis of Wesco. "They are very easy to deal with. And I have to say as well that we dealt with Hart Realty for the sale of our house and then the purchase of this one, and they were excellent. They worked very well with the builder and at the end it was such a pleasant experience. We couldn't be happier right now."
